Search Engine Marketing

Search Engine Marketing incorporates many aspects to help bring visitors to your site. Of course, there are many ways to market your website–some require money, some time. When your website is designed with search engine marketing in mind, there are many techniques that can be implemented to bring visitors to your site for free.

The first element to consider is your keyword development. Keywords allow search engines to determine what your site is about, and place it accordingly when people search for specific terms. For example, if your keyword for a page on your website is ‘massage therapy’ then search engines will generally rank you for that term. The more related keywords you use, the better.

Content creation is the next step. Once you have your keywords picked out, writing some really good content for those keywords is essential to getting picked up by the search engines.  It’s important that the content you write on your site is unique and contains many of your keywords placed strategically throughout the content. This is more of an art than a science, since many search engines like Google have patented your ranking system. So it’s hard to guarantee specific results.

The next element to consider is Search Engine Optimization. This includes many elements, but is primarily concerned with the placement of your meta data, which includes your keywords, along with titles and descriptions for all your pages. These elements are never seen by visitors, but rather help search engines understand what your content is about and rank it accordingly.

Link building is another important aspect search engine marketing. Getting other sites to link to your site not only drives traffic to your site, but it also shows search engines that your site is a valuable resource that other people think is important. There are many strategies to build inbound links to your site. Some are considered black hat, which means that if you build links the wrong way, the search engines will actually penalize you. So it’s good to have a professional working for you when you undertake a link building campaign.

Pay-per-click campaigns are the last aspect of search engine marketing that I implement with my clients.  Once you’ve developed your keywords and optimized your site for the search engines, we move from the realm of free advertsising to paid advertising.  Pay-per-click campains allow you to purchase space on search pages you don’t rank well on.  This can cost a couple dollars a day to a couple thousand.  Therefore, it’s important to undersand what you’re doing when you set up a pay-per-click campaign.  In addition, we can do things like split test your ads to assure you’re getting the most visitors for your money.
